Capture the Character

Dark Woodwork Shouldn't Be Dark Photos.

St. Paul homes are full of character, but tricky to photograph. Improper lighting makes rich woodwork look muddy. Our HDR process captures the warmth and detail of historic homes without blowing out the windows.

Us vs. The Competition

While others rely on automated software, Cineminn uses manual blending techniques. This is essential for St. Paul's mix of natural light and historic interiors.

Saint Paul Highland Park Mac-Groveland Summit Hill Mendota Heights West St. Paul Roseville Eagan

St. Paul, MN

St. Paul listings have a problem most photographers ignore.

St. Paul has the deepest stock of pre-1940 character homes in the metro. Highland Park, Summit Hill, Mac-Groveland, Crocus Hill — these neighborhoods are dominated by homes with architectural decisions a 21st-century photographer often can’t process. Dark woodwork. Plaster archways. Narrow stairwells. Coffered ceilings. Stained glass that turns sunlight into colored noise on the floor.

Most photographers come back from a Highland Park shoot with photos that make a beautiful 1928 colonial look like a basement.

The St. Paul submarkets we shoot.

  • Highland Park (55105, 55116). 1920s–1940s colonial, English Tudor, period craftsman. Dark woodwork is the default. 7-bracket HDR with separate wood-tone recovery pass.
  • Summit Hill + Crocus Hill. Higher-end ($800K–$2.5M) period luxury. Stained glass, ornate woodwork, coffered ceilings. We bring strobe for darker spaces; ambient won’t do it.
  • Mac-Groveland. Mid-tier residential with strong character home representation. Bronze + Gold tier dominant.
  • Como Park + Merriam Park. Mid-tier 1920s–1950s residential. Mature tree canopy means scheduling around light is more critical than in newer neighborhoods.
  • Downtown St. Paul condos (55102). Loft + high-rise. Different shoot template — more like North Loop than Highland Park.

The dark-woodwork fix.

St. Paul character homes have a calibration challenge most photographers can’t solve in standard workflow:

  • · 7-bracket exposure fusion — standard 5 doesn’t reach the dynamic range
  • · Separate wood-tone recovery pass — quartersawn oak, walnut, mahogany each render differently; we calibrate per home
  • · Strobe-assisted darker spaces — libraries, dens, sun porches at the wrong time of day
  • · Stained glass treated separately — we shoot it as a feature subject, not as a window

If your last St. Paul photographer made the wood look black, this is why.

From the founder

St. Paul listings are sold on character. The job of the photo is to show the buyer that the character was preserved — not lost to bad lighting. The Highland Park sellers we’ve worked with often tell us the same thing: they want the photos to look the way the house feels at 4 PM in October. That’s a specific brief. We can shoot to it.

— Julian Lundgren, founder

St. Paul questions.

Do you shoot pre-1940 character homes properly?

It’s our specialty for St. Paul. The 7-bracket plus wood-tone recovery workflow was developed shooting Highland Park and Summit Hill specifically. Standard on every Cineminn shoot in 55105/55116.

Recommended package for a Summit Hill listing?

Gold + real twilight for sub-$1M. Platinum + cinematic property tour for $1M+ where the architectural detail warrants the upgrade.
